On September 14, 2021, Apple officially presented the latest generation of iPhone. And as usual, he presented the virtues of the new devices to great effect. Apple hasn’t changed the graphics all that much with iOS 15 , but there are still a lot of things worth getting used to and tinkering with. Whether you have a new iPhone 13 or just upgraded your existing iPhone.

Most of the highlighted features are available for all iPhone models running iOS 15, but there are some limited to iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series that are not applicable to older models. So make sure you have iOS 15 on your iPhone – or whip out your iPhone 13/13 Pro – and check out some of our favorite and less obvious features.

iPhone 13 pro max

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max is an iOS smartphone with cutting-edge features that make it an excellent choice for all kinds of uses. It has a large 6.7 -inch display and a resolution of 2778×1284 pixels, among the highest currently available. The features offered by this Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max are countless and top of the range. Starting with the 5G module which allows excellent data transfer and internet browsing, passing through Wi-Fi connectivity and GPS 12 megapixel camera. The thickness of 7.7mmit is truly contained and makes this Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max even more spectacular.

iPhone 13 Pro Max: Colors

Unlike the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, which are available in five bright and fun colors, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a textured matte back and is available in four different colors: graphite, gold, silver and Pacific. The colors are slightly muted compared to those of the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini to give it a more sober look. The stainless steel frame, meanwhile, is polished and color-matched to the back of the phone.

Design

Apple has given the iPhone 12 series a design redesign with squared edges similar to the iPhone 5. The iPhone 13 series maintains the same design language without major changes. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a stainless steel frame with a glossy exterior. The color of the frame matches that of the back of the phone, depending on which color you choose. The bottom of the phone houses the Lightning port which, sadly, hasn’t been replaced by USB-C yet. The main speaker grille and microphone flank the charging port.

On the right we have what Apple calls the ” side button ” which activates Siri after a long press and can also be used to turn the device on and off. The left side of the chassis houses the SIM card slot, volume rockers and a mute button.

Square edges got mixed reactions last year when it comes to ergonomics. While some people like the design and say it makes the phone easier to hold, some consumers weren’t too happy with the new design because it didn’t fit too well in the hand. The iPhone 11 and previous iPhones had curved edges that gave a natural hand-held feel. iPhone 13 Pro Max keeps its edges flat and is slightly heavier and thicker than iPhone 12 Pro Max. So it would be interesting to see how it feels in the hand. The iPhone 12 Pro Max wasn’t the most ergonomic phone, and if you’re to believe the size, it seems like it’s only gotten worse with the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Screen

This is the department where the iPhone 13 Pro Max gets the biggest improvement over its predecessors. After years of Android phones with high refresh rate screens, Apple has finally joined the club with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPad Pro has had a Pro-motion display for quite some time now and it’s finally it’s made it to the iPhone 13 series, albeit only on the Pro models.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch display is now an LTPO panel capable of 10Hz to 120Hz refresh rates. This looks like the implementation we’ve seen on some Samsung devices like the Galaxy s21 ultra or even the new Galaxy Z Fold 3. The screen is a lively-looking OLED panel and features Apple’s True-tone technology. You can view HDR content on screen with a maximum brightness of up to 1 nit.

Another big change in terms of the display on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the narrowing of the notch. Apple introduced a full-screen display with a notch in 2017 with the “iPhone X” . Since then, the notch has remained on all new iPhone devices, while the competition has moved on to hole-shaped cutouts and even under-screen cameras. Though it’s rumored to come to the iPhone 14 next year, Apple has slightly reduced the notch on the iPhone 13 series.

The earpiece is now at the top of the screen, which has allowed Apple to reduce the size of the notch compared to previous generation iPhones. It’s still there and quite prominent, which is disappointing given the progress other manufacturers have made in terms of display technology. We are happy to see a 120Hz display, which every smartphone enthusiast has been asking for and which Apple has finally listened to.

Previous iPhones’ OLED displays were some of the most accurate and pleasing to the eye, and with the addition of a high refresh rate screen, the iPhone 13 Pro Max now has one of the best screens on a phone, especially for consumer or even creating content. The edges of the screen remain as flat as last year’s iPhones.

SoCs, RAM and storage

Every year Apple internally updates the iPhone with its latest mobile platform and this year is no different. The iPhone 13 Pro Max receives Apple’s A15 Bionic chipset based on the 5 nm manufacturing process. If we trust Apple’s chip history, the A15 Bionic is one of the most powerful smartphone chips, capable of doing anything you throw at it. Whether it’s demanding games or rendering 4K video, the iPhone 13 Pro Max can do it all effortlessly, thanks to the A15 chipset.

iPhone 13 pro

iPhone 13 Pro, as well as its big brother 13 Pro Max, is a smartphone that closely resembles the previous generation, which in turn does not differ from the first iPhone with notch, iPhone X.

Family feeling therefore guaranteed, even if Apple has never dared to flex its muscles as this year and I am referring to the rear body in which the three enormous photographic lenses peep out, enclosed in a transparent island. The photographic sector of the new iPhone is one of the major changes and without a doubt the best card that the company wants to play, for this reason design also becomes the protagonist in communicating it: the iPhone 13 Pro takes great photos and you just need to look at it to realize it.

The general dimensions are always the same (146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7 mm) and are, in my opinion, right, a good compromise between handling and display size which remains 6.1-inch diagonal.

The steel edges are always squared and with a glossy finish in all the colours, however the weight has increased from 189 to 204 grams , the little that however makes one-handed use a little less easy. Returning to the optical group, not only have the dimensions increased but also the thickness, well masked by the three levels on which the elements are placed (island, lens frame and lens glass).

Usability and software

Ultimately, the usability of the iPhone 13 Pro is not very different from that of the predecessor and all the other iPhones on the market. This is one of the prerogatives of iOS: being able to always offer a familiar, easy and immediate environment, whatever the product you are using.

For this reason, net of some special photographic functions, all in all the iPhone 13 Pro does not add anything in particular to what has already been said countless times about iPhones. Here everything is very fast and reliable, the telephone part is impeccable as is the connectivity part and iOS 15 adds even more possibilities and refinements.

Before talking to you about some new features of the operating system, I’ll focus on the telephone part, because I want to reiterate, as with the iPhone 12 Pro, that this is one of the smartphones that picks up the best ever, they feel perfectly in the capsule and have a speakerphone that can also be used in noisy environments or in the car thanks to the double speaker. This is to say that although it is a hyper-technological product, the basics have not been overlooked.

Autonomy and recharge

Recharge and autonomy, cross and delight respectively of the iPhone 13 Pro. The autonomy left me dumbfounded , I didn’t expect such a duration, also because with the iPhone 12 Pro you couldn’t complain but neither could you rest easy on very busy days.

Well, with the new model and despite the bogeyman of 120 Hz, the results have been above expectations: it takes you into the evening without batting an eye and always keeps a good reserve just in case, a very linear behavior and low drain even under stress.

The other side of the coin is a top-up that is beginning to be a “chance”, 25 Watt with cable, 15 Watt wireless and Apple that seems to look the other way in the face of a competition that is inventing one after the other . There are Android smartphones for just over 200 Euros that recharge in half an hour! It is certainly a choice, but let me tell you that it is becoming increasingly incomprehensible (along with that of insisting on the Lightning connector, when the whole world including the European Union would like Type-C).

Main camera

The 12MP main sensor is now larger (1.9µm pixels) and has received stabilization over the Sensor Shift sensor of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, while the aperture is now F/1.5. The result is an ability to store significantly more light and ultimately produce significantly better photos in terms of dynamic range, detail and color accuracy.

The photos at night and in low light are the field in which the differences emerge clearly, however even during the day it has been possible to further refine the general quality. Having said that, there is still room for improvement, for example in HDR management that is not always perfect and in night photos where there are people, which are a bit overworked and emphasized on sharpness.

iPhone 13 mini

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini is available in five new colors, with a slightly revised design compared to the models that preceded them. The rear cameras are now arranged diagonally while the notch has been made smaller as the rumors suggested.

The autonomy of the new generation of iPhones has been improved. Apple declares that iPhone 13 Mini is able to resist up to 1:30h more than the previous generation while iPhone 13 gains up to 2:30h of autonomy.

The new 12MP main camera is now able to capture up to 47% more light thanks to the pixel size of 1.7 microns and a focal aperture of the lens equal to f/1.6 . This camera gains a feature that was exclusive to “Pro” models last year: Sensor Shift .

The new main camera is joined by a new ultra-wide-angle camera, also 12MP but with f/2.4 focal aperture and 120° FOV (13mm focal length).

Design

The iPhone 13 Mini has a practically unchanged design with regards to the front panel. It still has the same edge-to-edge screen, topped with a notch. The notch – which is smaller in width than before – houses the TrueDepth Camera system, light and proximity sensors, an earpiece and a microphone.

The back of the phone also features the same design as last year’s iPhone 12 Mini, except for the camera locations. It has a glass back that sits on an aluminum casing. Both cameras are positioned diagonally rather than vertically, making it easier to distinguish between the new Mini and the old one.

SoCs, RAM and storage

The new iPhone 13 Mini is supercharged by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, an upgrade over last year’s A14 chip. While RAM information is not yet available, we do know that storage options are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. Apple has finally ditched the controversial 64GB variant now that iPhones take better photos and videos. 64GB is simply not enough for a significant portion of users anymore, especially now that Apple Music and other streaming services support lossless and hi-res audio formats.

Front camera

The front camera of the iPhone 13 Mini is always the TrueDepth Camera. Use a dot projector and infrared scanner to map faces in 3D. It is used for both Face ID and Portrait mode photo effects. The Portrait mode effects are as follows: Natural, Studio, Outline, Scene, Mono Scene, and High Intensity Mono Light.

The front camera also supports:

  • night mode
  • Deep Fusion
  • Smart HDR 4
  • Photo styles
  • Cinematic mode for recording video with shallow depth of field (1080p at 30fps)
  • HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60 fps
  • 4K video recording at 24fps, 25fps, 30fps or 60fps
  • 1080p HD video recording at 25fps, 30fps or 60fps
  • Slow motion video support for 1080p at 120fps
  • Time-lapse video with stabilization
  • Time-lapse night mode
  • Cinematic video stabilization (4K, 1080p and 720p)
  • QuickTake videos
  • Capture ample color for photos and live photos
  • Lens correction
  • Flash Retina
  • Automatic image stabilization
  • Burst mode

Battery and charge

The latest iPhone Mini can play up to 17 hours of video on a single charge or stream video online for 13 hours. The larger battery of this unit can alternatively play 55 hours of audio without needing to plug it in. That’s an increase from the 3, 10, and 55 hours respectively on last year’s iPhone 12 Mini.

Security and options

Face ID

The iPhone remains protected by Face ID. It uses the TrueDepth front camera, dot projector and infrared scanner to create a 3D model of the user’s face. It works even in dark environments, after the initial setup is done in a bright place. While the iPhone 13 lineup was rumored to bring back Touch ID, via an under-screen scanner, this has proven to be wrong. Apple decided to make the notch smaller by placing the earpiece at the top edge of the phone, rather than in the notch itself.

Face ID can be used to unlock your phone and authenticate your purchases. In times of COVID-19, Apple has given Apple Watch users the ability to unlock their iPhone Face ID via the watch, when it’s hidden.

Siri

With iOS 15, Siri will be able to perform some basic tasks offline, thanks to on-device machine learning. So whether you’re in a subway station, in the middle of the desert, or just out of data, Siri will be able to perform certain actions. It can notably pause/play music, add alarms or reminders, or activate certain parameters such as WiFi.
